145. DANIEL DUNHAM (Jonathan Dunham, Benjamin Dunham, Mary3 Bloomfield, Thomas2,1), b. Woodbridge 1730; d. date & place unknown; m. Catherine Campbell, b. 17 Dec 1734; d. 17 Dec 1816, d/o Joseph and Martha Campbell of Piscataway, N.J.

Daniel Dunham d. prior to 1821 possibly in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, or vicinity. He was a

Tory and in 1780 left his wife and went to St Johns, New Brunswick, leaving his youngest son with his

wife. Bell's list shows that he reached Saint John in 1783 in Company 50 on the "Neptune" accompanied by one adult female, three children over 10, and two younger children. If his wife did remain in New Jersey at this time with a son, the adult female could have been Daniel's daughter or daughter-in-law, and the youngest of the children could have been Daniel's grandchildren. Dunham Genealogy by Isaac W. Durham says that Daniel and Catherine Dunham had four children. Other evidence suggests that there were where at least six and possibly seven: Lewis, John and Sarah, all baptised in 1758; Campbell; David Alston, b. c1762; Jonathan, b. c1768; and perhaps Seth.

Campbell Dunham is the one said to have remained in New Jersey. Sarah would have been at least 25 In 1783, and could have been the adult female who accompanied Daniel. It is believed that she subsequently married a Wright. Daniel Dunham received a town lot, Parrtown 687, at the comer of Orange and Wentworth Streets. He also received later land grants but was on the list of Freeman of the City in 1785 as a joiner. On 21 Dec 1821 the city lot Parrtown 687 of "Daniel Dunham, deceased" was sold by his "heirs at law" - John Dunham and his wife Elizabeth, David Alston Dunham and his wife Mary, and Jonathan Dunham and his wife Elizabeth, to James Hendricks. Daniel Dunham and Catherine Campbell had children:

John b: abt. 1755

Lewis b: abt. 1758

Sarah b: abt. 1758 (twins?)

Jonathan b: abt. 1760

David Alston b: abt. 1762

Campbell b: 1766

Daniel with his sons Lewis (my 4th g-grandfather), John, David and I believe Jonathan all came to Canada. From the marriages that follow I also believe that they had all gone behind the British lines sometime between 1776 and 1783. I also believe that a son Asher was part of this group, but some people believe he was a cousin to Daniel.

Lewis married Catherine Slegt, February 3rd., 1779 at Staten Island, New York. his brother

John married Elisabeth Oliver, January 6th., 1779 at Staten Island, New York.
