Text From Source: JOHN VERSHAL SINGLETARY, ninth generation (Jacob, Jacob, Joseph, Benjamin Ebenezer, Richard, Benjamin, Richard, Francis) was born in Georgia, in August 1851. He married Mary Evline Bryant on February 4, 1890, in Mayo, Lafayette, Florida. John Vershal was born in Georgia and died in Day, Lafayette County, Florida, in 1911. Mary Evline Bryant was born in May 1875 in Georgia (twenty years old in the 1900 Census). Her date of death is unknown. Both John Vershal and Mary Evline are buried at the Bethel Creek Church Cemetery at Day, Florida. This church with adjacent cemetery is just inside the Lafayette County line, between Madison and Day, Florida. It can be reached by traveling north (from Mayo, Florida) on US 27 for nine miles, turn right on FL 53, and go nine miles north (through Day and toward Madison County). The church and cemetery are on your left. This cemetery is also known as Mill Creek Cemetery.

...

Note: John Vershal was with his parents in Decatur, Georgia Census in 1870. The Florida State Gazetteer in the year 1882 lists the prominent farmers of Lafayette County, who were engaged in general farming and stock raising, timber and naval stores, the number of acres, and the post office where they received their mail. The information reported is based on information received by the Gazetteer in1880. The Gazetteer showed that John Vershal Singletary owned forty acres of property in Bula, Lafayette County, Florida. Bula post office was located at Irvin’s Ferry on the Old Luraville Road, four miles from Mayo, Lafayette County, Florida. John Vershal was not found in the 1880 Census (which began on June 1, 1879, and ended on May 31, 1880). This means that John Vershal probably came to Bula, Lafayette County, Florida, sometime between May 31, 1880, and January 1, 1881, or at least did not own property until that period of time.
