Madison and his parents, John Henry Ferguson and Nancy Anderson Bunten-Ferguson, moved from Boone County, Indiana to Benton County, Iowa when he was one year old.
Madison and Mary ann were married in Iowa, and moved to Adair county, Missouri with their six sons in 1888. The seventh son, Paul Ethridge was born in Adair County.
Madison was a farmer, and raised grains and livestock.
His religion was Methodist, and his political party was the Socialist Party.

Mary Ann was bedridden for many years with Cancer. She lived next door to a "colored" church, and enjoyed talking and joking with the parishoners as they came and went. She was one to enjoy a bawdy joke.
She spent her time piecing together quilts.
Her husband died many years earlier, and so she had a live-in housekeeper/aide to take care of her as her health was failing.
Her address was 502 S. Main, Kirksville, Missouri
