Joab enlisted in Co. D. 3rd Regiment N.J. Volunteers in April 1861. He re-enlisted in 1862 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Co. F., 21st Regiment, N.J. Volunteers.

He was residing in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1902.
