Impressive services marked the burial here on Sunday afternoon of the body of Private Nial E. Drake, and overseas veteran and son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drake of Cedar Rapids, formerly living near Lamont. The services were held at the Methodist Church and were attended by a large congregation of friends and old time neighbors who expressed the utmost sympathy for the family. The members of the local post of the American Legion attended in a body and burial was made in Oakland Cemetery.

Private Drake was 28 years of age. He was born near Lamont Aug 31, 1890, and grew to young manhood on the farm of his father, the family later moving to Manchester and residing here for several years prior to going to Cedar Rapids. Nial was called to serve his country and humanity in the world war starting from Independence on May 27, 1918, for Camp Dodge at Des Moines. He went overseas with the 88th division as a member of Company I, 352nd Infantry, about the middle of August of that year. He saw active service in the front line and also served as a messenger runner, in charge of carrier pigeons. Nial was in the terrific fighting which marked the bttles of the Argonne Forest, thus earning his spurs as a veteran of that great conflict.

As a result of exposure, Nial was taken ill in December with influenza and pneumonia with pulmonary abscesses. He died on December 10, 1918, and the body was given temporary burial at Bazolites, France. Surviving him are his parents, one sister, Mrs. Elsie Sherrer of Lamont, and one brother, Donald, of Cedar Rapids."

 

Nial is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Delaware Co., Iowa --
