Capt. Nathaniel Fitz Randolpoh was one of Woodbridge's Revolutionary heroes, ans was called Capt. Natty by his friends and admirers. His tombstone indicates hew was born in Woodbridge in 1747/8 and that his death was caused by wounds received in the Battle of Springfield, N.J., on June 23, 1780. He was captain of the Middlesex Milittia, then elected naval officer of the Eastern District of New jersey on the 12th of December 1778. The day before hgis election the Council ordered that a sword should be purchased for him, as a fitting tribute to his patriotism, and this was later given to him.

On June 24, 1778 he, with fourteen men, made an attack on the enemy's guard, opposite Elizabethport. He had retruned to his home, and in January 1779 was taken from his bed by his captors, and was conveyed to New York and there imprisoned and cruelly treated, until May 26, 1780, a period of about a year and four months, at which time he was exchanged, it is supposed, for a Captain Jones of the British Army.
