Note on Husband: Joseph DUNHAM - shared note

Joseph, son of Josiah and Anna Williams, is probably also the father of Joseph, husband of Isabella Jackson. The last name of his wife, Elizabeth, is unknown. This is contrary to other accounts that have Josiah's daughter, Elizabeth, married to her 4th cousin once removed, Joseph, son of Jonathan Dunham and Mary Porter. I find no proof for either line. I do find circumstantial evidence for the simpler, first account above.

Patty Myers' book on the Freeman family cite this father and son line extended by Woodbridge census records from 1830 on. However, none of her references for this family group note that Joseph had a son Joseph. The Willis Freeman Collection has only notes of Josiah's father, Elisha, and family. The Dunham Genealogy's awkward wording could have been misread that Joseph had a son Joseph. lastly, The DAR application, 361185, claims Elizabeth married her cousin Joseph and had Joseph, yet offers no proof.

Isaac Watson Dunham (in Dunham Genealogy, 1907, p 48) says JOSIAH (b. April 1, 1735; son of Elisha and Mary Freeman) married Anna Williams; b. 1755. She died March 10, 1829; he died in 1816. They had Azariah (m. Phebe and had Phebe); Elizabeth; and Joseph. Joseph married and had Elisha (b. 1798; m. Campbell); and James (b. 1810). James, in turn, had Ichabod in 1834. Yet names no their children.

The 1830 and 1840 US Census records indicate a larger family for Joseph, and reports age groups but no names. The 1850 census and a property owners map of that year show the younger Joseph (m. Isabella Jackson) and family, with James and Elias's households nearby. Isabella's siblings also live with or near her and Joseph on Turnpike Road (now Main Street) about a mile South of central Woodbridge at what is now the intersection of Main and Woodbridge Center Drive. I have found no other household in the 1830 and 1840 NJ census records that could be the younger Joseph found as head of household in 1850.
