Text From Source: Abel DONHAM Jr.,69 father of Elizabeth (DONHAM) RECTOR, was born 11 October 1811 in OH, the son of Abel DONHAM and Elizabeth FERGUSON. He married on 7 April 1831 in Clermont County, OH, to Matilda REECE.70 Matilda was born 30 June 1814, the daughter of John REECE and Sarah MORDOCK. They had thirteen children. Matilda died 21 April 1871 in IN. Abel remarried 21 January 1874 in Clay County, IN, to Nancy GILBERT,71 daughter of Elisha and Eleanore GILBERT. They had one daughter. The following is a biography of Abel DONHAM Jr.:72 Abel DONHAM, born October 5, 1812, came to Perry Township from Warren County, Ohio, in 1832. He took a grant of land north of Cory on what was later known as the lower Bloomington Road, and returned to Ohio to bring back his wife, Matilda, and their son, Lemon, together with their household furnishings and livestock. They settled in their new home in 1833. Nine children were born to Abel and Matilda, one dying in infancy. Lemon, Elizabeth, Henry S., William R., Mary Wliza, Ledam, Margaret, and Ruth grew to adulthood. Lemon died in 1853, at the age of 21, leaving two sons, Morgan Sinclair and William, who were reared by their grandfather and grandmother DONHAM. Abel worked hard clearing and farming the land. He also dug coal from the outcroppings to sell in Terre Haute. He made trips by flatboat to New Orleans with produce. Matilda DONHAM died in 1870 and Abel married Nancy GILBERT, daughter of Elisha and Eleanore GILBERT, in 1873. He then built a house across the road from the original homestead and there their one child was born, Sarah Etta, on April 3, 1875. In 1890, they bought a house and moved to Cory across the street south from the Methodist Church. Abel died September 16, 1892. Nancy and daughter, Sarah Etta, lived in Cory until 1897, at which time Sarah Etta married Almon KESTER, and they moved to their farm west and north of Cory. Nancy Gilbert DONHAM lived with her daughter until her death, November 17, 1923. Abel DONHAM died 16 Sep 1892 in Clay County, IN. He is buried at Conaway-Cade Cemetery, Clay County, IN.73 Nancy died 17 November 1923. |
