Text From Source: JOHN GYLES. He was, without any doubt, a younger brother of Thomas Gyles, Esq., of Pemaquid, of whom an account is given in the preceding pages. I have met with no record, or positive statement, of the fact of such relationship ; but the circumstances of the case are such as to leave no doubt of the fact. He was born in 1653, and married Mary, before 1686. She was born in 1666. A coat of arms has come down from his grandson John Gyles, and doubtless from him, almost precisely similar to one found among the descendants of Thomas Gyles. Tl\e similarity of names in the two families is also to be noted. And, what is still more to the purpose, he lived at Pemaquid, in a house belonging to Thomas Gyles. How long he lived there we have no means of judging, only that he was there before 1686, and left there in 1689. It does not appear that he was there at the time of the incursion of the Indians, wlien Thomas Gyles was slain, for his name is not mentioned in connection with that event. He had probably left that place not long before. |
