Civil War Union Soldier and Sailor. He was mustered in as a Private in Company I, 10th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 29, 1861. He then served with his unit for the next year and a half in the field before he was discharged due to disability at the Convalescent Camp in Alexandria, Virginia on January 16, 1863. Later that year he joined uo with the Union Navy, being mustered in as a Landsman on October 2, 1863, and being assigned to the recieving ship "USS Princeton", which was berthed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the Navy until he was honorably mustered out on November 21, 1864.
