Thomas D. Emes Petition for lease of a Clergy Reserve in Upper Canada.
To His Excellency Francis Gore, Esquire, Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Upper Canada In Council.
The Petition of Thmas D. Emes of North Gwillimbury, yeoman,
Humbly herewith,
That your Petitioner is desirous of Leasing Lot number Twenty-five, in the third Concession of North Gwillimbury, upon Lake Simcoe, the same being a Clergy Reserve, and craves leave to offer Silas Emes of the same place, yeoman, as a Surity to be joined in a Bond with your Petitioner for securing thepayment of the rents according to the Terms of the Lease.
Wherefore, your Petitioner prays that your Excellency may be pleased to grant him a lease of the said Lot, subject to the conditions expressed in the notice issued from Lieutenant-Governor's Office, dated 16 Oct 1807, And as in duty bound shall ever pray,

By October 15, 1809 it seems that Thomas D. Emes was not well and acknowledged that "being that tis apoyntedfor all men once to dy and being of sound mind and memerey - after recomondin my sole to God that gave it, and my Body to the grave...." On that day he madeout his last will and testament. He directed "that my worly Intrest be deposed of as follows after my Doctoring and further Expenses is payed out of my parsonal intrist..." He asked "That Real Estate that I Dye leased of be eqully devided betwen my Beloved wife Elizabeth Emes and my Daughter Betsey Emes and thatmy wife have the Emprouement of the Land and parsonol intrest after the beforementioned Expenses be paid until my Daughter arive at the age of Eighteen years...." At the bottom of the will Thomas made his feeble mark, and it is believed that he died a few days later.
