Text From Source: 4 SARAH1 MOORE, d. c1688; m. as his 1/wife Samuel Dennis, b. before 1650; d. Woodbridge, N.J., 1708, s/o Robert and Mary Dennis. Samuel Dennis was called brother-in-law in the will of Samuel Moore. Samuel Dennis m/2 Woodbridge 14 Apr 1689 as her 2/husb. Mary Lothrop Crowell (Woodbridge VR calls her "Widow Crow"). She was b. Barnstable, Mass., 22 Mar 1654, d/o Joseph2 Lothrop (John1) and Mary Ansell/Ausell (Barnstable VR). By Mary (Lothrop) Crowell, Samuel Dennis had a son, Jonathan, b. Woodbridge 2 Sept 1692 (VR). Jonathan was mentioned in his father's will. Mary Lothrop m/1 Barnstable, Mass., 16 Jan 1673 Edward Crowell (Barnstable VR). "Edward Crow late of New England Deceased the 31st of July 1688" (Woodbrigde VR). 1688-9 March 1. Letters of administration on the estate of Edward Crow of Woodbridge dec'd intestate issued to his widow Mary. (N.J. Arch., 21:166.) Edward and Mary (Lothrop) Crowell had the following children born in Barnstable (VR):

Woodbridge 20 Nov 1732 (VR), d/o Joseph1 Frazee & Mary Osborrn and wid/Joseph4 Pike (John3,2,1); no issue by Elizabeth. See Pike and Frazee. Edward Crowell m/3 as her 2/husb bef. 1741 Christian2 Brown (George1), b. Woodbridge 26 Apr 1701 (VR); had issue. Edward Crowell d. Oct 1756, will proved 17 Oct 1756 (N.J. Arch., 32:82); Christian Brown m/1 Dr. David Stewart, who d. 21 May 1733, age 39 (gravestone) bur. 1st Presby. Ch. Cem., Woodbridge (New Jersey Browns, p.16). The children of Yelverton and Edward Cromwell are recorded in Woodbridge VItal Records, as are those of Christian Brown and Dr David Stewart.

1669-70 March 18. Patent to Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge for: 1) a houselot of 12 acres betw. Tho. Blumfeild jun. and Joshua Bradley; 2) 5 acres of meadow on Papiack Creek betw. Stephen Kent jun. and Samuel Smith; 3) 1 acre of meadow, Eastside of Papiack Creek, next to Robert Dennis and John Bishop senior; 4) 60 acres of upland at the north end of Langster's Plain, bounded E. by Stephen Kent, W. by Thomas Blumfeilde senior, N. by a road, S. by the road to New Piscataway; 5) 16 acres of Raraton's meadow, bounded N. by John Pike jun. N. by David Makany, E. by Robert Vauquellin and Benjamin Parkest, S. by a creek. (N.J. Arch., 21:12.)

Of the three Dennis men who figured with such prominence in early Woodbridge history [Robert, John, Samuel], Samuel Dennis was unquestionably the most popuular man of the three enjoying the confidence and esteem of his fellow townsmen and at the same time occupying the more important and greater number of civil offices. He was a weaver; received twelve acresfor his house lot 1667-77, and in the freeholders list of 1670 was credited with 94 acres; juryman 1671; one of the "Schepena" under the Dutch rule in 1673; ensign of the local militia company in 1674; on various church and civil committees; deputy to the Legislature in 1682-3; town clerk 1688-1692; member of the Governor's council 1684 and 1687; as judge was president of the township court in 1686-7 and assistant justice 1683 and 1692; he was deputy again in 1198-99; served as marshal, sergeant, overseer of highways, rate maker at different dates. His brother-in-law was Samuel Moore, an older man, and likewise prominent in Woodbridge. Dally makes the following statement: "In some respects the jurist Samuel Dennis was the peer of Moore, and as we have seen, both men were held in high estimation by the town folk." (Monnette, p.744.)

1691-2 -- Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge was chosen Treasurer of this County for ye Excise (Minutes of Middlesex Co. Court, Monnette, p.538).

1694 -- The Grand Jury presented Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge for challenging Capt. Bishop of Woodbridge to meet him witth a "Back Sworde" and Capt. John Bishop for accepting challenge (ibid., p. 536).

1694-5 March 5. Power of attorney. Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge having married Mary, the widow of Edward Crow, and thereby legally become the administrator of the estate of said Crow who has died intestate, empowers his said wife to manage the estate for the benefit of her children by Crow, vizt: Mary, Yelverton, Joseph and Edward; followed by the inventory of the part of the estate, belonging to the children, and the receipt by Mary Dennis for it on behalf of her children (N.J. Arch., 21:231).

1694 -- Joseph Crow [Crowell] of Piscataway, apprentice to Thomas Grub of Piscataway, complained of his diet and abuse from the wife of said Grub. Court ordered that Samuel Dennis, said Joseph Crow's father-in-law [step-father], shall pay to Thos. Grub 7 pounds and 10 shillings and Joseph Crow be discharged from his apprenticeship. (Minutes of Middlesex Co. Court, Monnette p. 536.)

1690 -- An indictment against one Thomas Smith of Woodbridge for stealing a saddle and bridle. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty and it is ordered by the Court that he make restitution of ye goods to Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge (ibid., p. 538).

1692 June 8. Deed. George Bollen, late of N. Y. City, mariner, by his brother and attorney James Bollen, to Samuel Dennes of Woodbridge, for several lots, vizt: 1) a houselot of 11 acres, S. and E. the roads to, Straberry Hill and Piscataway, W. Thos. Blumfeild junior, dec'd., now grantee, N. grantee, formerly Hopewell Hull; 2) 8 acres of meadow on W. side of Papiack Creek, W. the next lot of 20 a., N. a creek, E. Papiack Cr., S. Ephraim Andrews; 3) 20 a. adjoining the last; 4) 30 a., E. Ephraim Andrews. (N.J. Arch., 21:204.)

1692 June 8. Deed. James Bollen of Mildletoun, carpenter, to Samuel Dennes of Woodbridge, for all his estate, right, etc., in and to the foregoing (ibid.).

1697 Sept 6. Deed. Samuel Dennis of Woodbridge and wife Mary to Richard Powell of the same place, innholder, for 5 acres of meadow there. S. Peter Lacount of Staten Island, formerly Robert Dennis dec'd, W. certain small creeks and coves, N. and E. a greater creek (ibid., 272).

1707 July 26. Dennes, Dennis, Samuel, of Woodbridge, East Jersey; will of. Wife Mary. Children - Samuel, sole executor, and Jonathan. Real and personal estate.
Witnesses - Sam'l Shepherd, Thos. Davis, Geo. Ewbanck. Proved 10 Jun 1708. Inventory of the personal estate of, £107.2.9, incl. a Bible and other books £1.8.-, made 2 Feb 1707/8. (N.J. Arch., 23:134.)

NOTE: Samuel Dennis, Sr. and Samuel, Jr. both married women by name of Mary. Sorting their children out is rather difficult. Mary (Lothrop) (Crowell) Dennis was b. 1654 and could be of child-bearing age well into her 40's (1694 plus a few).
