Individual Note

In Descendants of Edward Fitz Randolph, 1950, pp. 20-21, Loise Christian and Howard Fitz Randolph speculate that:

"By her second husband (Fitz Randolph):

vi. MARY, * married first, license Oct. 16, 1756, SAMUEL CODDINGTON, b. Apr. 21, 1731, died at Woodbridge before July 29, 1757, son of John5 and Agnes (Clarkson) Coddington; married 2nd, license Dec. 20, 1760, GABRIEL COMPTON, son of David and Sarah Compton. Letters of adm. to Mary and son William May 9, 1782 (NJA:35:87)."

However, this is based on Hugh Fitz Randolph's will, above, which refers to Mary Fitz Randolph Thorne Jackson's 6th child simply as Mary. It also makes her a daughter of Mary senior and, possibly, Jacob Fitz Randolph, based on a Mary Fitz Randolph being disowned by the Friends in 1765 for marrying a cousin, 29 years after the offending marriage.

This conclusion also implys that the elder mary and her cousin would have been married for no more than a year. Mary's first husband died in May 1775 before the birth of her son Joseph on Deceber 23, 1735. The younger Mary is estimated to have been born in 1737. Mry senior's next child, Charles was born January 11, 1738.

Given the popularity of the name Mary, particularly in the Fitz Randolph family, it seems nearly impossible that this Mary born in 1737 was the daughter of anyone other than the elder Mary Fitz Randolph Thorne's second husband James Jackson Jr.

It also casts doubt on the younger Mary's two marriages, Samuel Coddington and Gabriel Compton, based solely on the bride's name being Mary. So this genealogy does not accept those marriages as fact.2
