Note on Husband: Reuben Golden DRAKE - shared note

Reuben and his wife, Matilda, were among the earliest settlers of the Kickapoo Valley. They emigrated from Ohio in the spring of 1855, and located on the land on which they still lived when they were murdered.

They were members of the Christian Church in Kickapoo. Their funeral service was conducted by Elder Weils of Rock County.

The couple and their two grandchildren were buried together at Sugar Grove cemetery near the Christian Church.

LDS Ancestral File gives Reuben's birth date as 27 Nov 1825.

From "History of Vernon County, Wisconsin" pp605 and 611:

"Reuben Drake, a native of New Jersey, came in 1855, from Indiana and settled on Section 2 Township 11, Range 3 where he yet remains."

"Reuben Drake is one of the early settlers of Vernon County. He was born in New Jersey in 1824. When quite young, his parents moved to Ohio, and settled on a farm. He was there married, in 1846 to Matilda A.Sanders, born in Columbiana County, Ohio. He bought a piece of land in Indiana, and spent one and a half years. He then returned to Perry County, and remained there until 1855. In the spring of that year, he came to Vernon County, and entered land on section 12 of Township 11 North of Range 3 West, where he now resides. He built a small log cabin in which the family lived five years, and then built a hewed log house. In 1870 he erected the frame house in which he now lives. His son, Benjamin was born in Perry County Ohio in October, 1849. He came to Wisconsin with his parents. His younger days were spent in school, and on his father's farm. He was joined in marriage in Alpril 1871 to Sarah Beighle, a native of Pennsylvania."
